West Yorkshire Police are recruiting a number of Detention Officers at various locations across the Force.

The Job:

The role of a Detention Officer is a challenging, varied and rewarding career.

Detention Officers play a vital role in the safe and smooth running of our custody suites.
Working as part of a team under the supervision of the Custody Officer you will be dealing with the large number of detainees who are brought to our custody suites each year. Detainee’s safety and wellbeing are your responsibility from the moment they arrive at the police station, be that under arrest, returning on bail or attending voluntarily for the purpose of biometric data capture.

The role is designated under the Police Act 2017 to provide you with the powers to carry out certain parts of the role profile; biometrics data capture, collection of non-intimate samples and where necessary using reasonable force to restrain detainees.

General duties involve booking people in and out of custody, preparation and serving of food, dealing with enquiries from partner agencies, solicitors, members of the public etc and maintaining the custody suite to a compliant standard.

You will need to be able to work as part of a team but also use your own initiative and have a flexible approach in this challenging environment.

We will give you all the training and support you need, starting with a 6 week initial training course, which you must successfully complete. The course covers custody legislation, capturing biometric data, officer safety training and much more.

You must be physically capable to undertake the duties of the post including dealing with uncooperative and sometimes violent detainees.

You will provide a visible presence in our custody suites and be the face of West Yorkshire Police Custody, adhering to the Code of Ethics and Authorised Professional Practice (College of Policing). Respect for others regardless of their race, age, background or reason for arrest is absolutely essential.

You must be aged 18 or over at the time of applying.

Locations:

We have vacancies across the Force. During the recruitment process, you will be asked for your preferences as to where you would prefer to be located. Whilst we will take into consideration your preferences these cannot be guaranteed. The postings will be based on business requirements.

Shifts - We operate 24/7, 365 days of the year. You must be prepared to work unsocial hours on a shift rota (currently six days on 4 days off), working both days and nights. You must also be willing to work at any of our of custody suites across the force as required.

Please note: if you are successful at interview stage, you will be required to undertake a medical and vetting checks.

All job offers will be subject to satisfactory references, meeting the attendance criteria and vetting checks.
