PROMOTION PROCESS FOR SERGEANT TO INSPECTOR/DETECTIVE INSPECTOR AND EXTERNAL TRANSFER PROCESS FOR INSPECTOR/DETECTIVE INSPECTOR 2021

The promotion assessment for Sergeant to Inspector will be held between June and August 2021.

Applications are invited from Sergeants, who are suitably qualified through OSPRE or NPPF, wishing to be considered. We are also seeking existing Inspectors from other Forces wishing to level transfer as Inspectors or District Detective Inspectors.

Please note that the Chief Officer Team have approved a new process for the selection of Detective Inspectors and is applicable to those seeking a Detective Inspector posting on promotion, or for substantive Inspectors seeking a lateral move. West Yorkshire Police officers can refer to https://intranet.portal.wypnt.wypnet.org/NewsHub/NewsArchive/New-Detective-Inspector-Development-and-Selection-Process.aspx (this link may be copied and pasted into your browser). External officers requiring further information should email hr.postingsandpromotions@westyorkshire.police.uk If you wish to be considered for the role of Detective Inspector, you will be able to indicate this on the application form. Officers seeking promotion are still required to undergo the generic Sergeant to Inspector promotion assessment process.

Officers applying for this process should be up to date with their Officer Safety Training by the application form closing date – Tuesday 29 June 2021 at 23.55 hours – unless exempt. We are aware that due to COVID-19, there may have been delays in OST and you should therefore note any prospective training date on the application form.

Officers are required to have an up to date Performance Development Review, with an overall performance rating of at least ‘Successful Performer’, or equivalent appraisal system/rating for external officers. Applicants must meet the Force Attendance Standard at the closing date of the advertisement and at any subsequent date of promotion/posting.

The final stage of the promotion process will comprise a presentation and semi-structured panel interview. Applicants should note that the Competency and Values Framework (CVF), Level 2, will be applied to all areas of the selection process.

During the application process, you will be invited to indicate your preferences for any subsequent posting. Please note that every consideration will be given to your preferences but ultimate posting will be in accordance with organisational need.

Applications will no longer require the support and endorsement of District Commanders/Departmental Heads, or line manager verification of evidence. This follows an action from the National Police Chief’s Council in relation to workforce representation, and has been incorporated into West Yorkshire Police’s Diversity, Equality and Inclusion action plan.

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 29 June 2021 at 23.55 hours.

Important Candidate Information:

During the application process, candidates will complete an application form which is restricted to a specific word count. This form may be assessed for shortlisting purposes. Because of the importance of this stage of the process, all candidates should ensure that they give due regard to the quality of their written application to ensure that it can withstand the rigours of any shortlisting.

During the assessment process, promotion candidates will have a specific time period during which they will prepare a presentation topic, using flip charts to assist their presentation. Then they will deliver the presentation, which is timed. Immediately after this, the interview will commence.

Should anyone consider that they have a disability including a specific learning difficulty, for example, dyslexia, for which they may require an adjustment during the application and/or assessment process as described above, please would they advise by completing the section on the application form. Please note you may be required to provide any reports/certificates in relation to your condition to the Resourcing team to enable consideration to be given to any adjustment required. Alternatively, individuals may wish to contact Resourcing via email at hr.postingsandpromotions@westyorkshire.police.uk or telephone 01924 292262/295379 to discuss any questions they might have. Any matters raised will be reviewed before candidates enter the assessment process so that any reasonable adjustments can be given due consideration.
