THIS VACANCY HAS BEEN ADVERTISED EXTERNALLY

Forensic Collision Investigator (Entry)
Regional Scientific Support Services
Yorkshire and Humber Region

West Yorkshire Police, as the lead Force for the Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Scientific Support Services (RSSS), is looking to recruit up to 10 trainee Forensic Collision Investigators (FCI).

Regional Scientific Support Services form part of West Yorkshire Police and provide Forensic Collision Investigation services to the Yorkshire and Humber police forces. FCIs work regionally but operate from one of our four bases, located in Melton (Humberside), Sheffield (South Yorkshire), Thirsk (North Yorkshire) and Wakefield (West Yorkshire).

The Forensic Collision Investigation Unit provides cover across the whole of the Yorkshire and Humber region, an area covering close to 5000 square miles with a population of over 5 million and containing three of the north’s busiest motorways. We attend scenes as emergency responders, ranging from single-vehicle collisions on country lanes to multi-vehicle incidents on motorways.

Working as a trainee FCI, you will undergo a comprehensive and continued training programme, which will build upon your current skills and experience, to facilitate your progression to become an expert witness. During your training, you will attend both fatal and potential fatal collisions with a mentor, before progressing to independent deployment across the region.

FCI’s shape and heavily influence high-profile cases, by progressing a forensic investigation from the date of the incident through to presentation at court. To assist the investigation, FCI’s utilise cutting-edge technology and techniques to capture and process evidence. The evidence and conclusions arising from an FCI investigation will be collated into an expert witness report, which will be presented to Coroners courts, the Criminal Justice System (CJS) or other interested parties.
Do you:
- Have a good understanding of maths and physics?
- Have the willingness to attend and ability to pass training courses up to foundation degree level (or equivalent)?
- Hold a full current UK/European manual driving licence?
- Have the ability and willingness to work flexibly if required?
- Have a general understanding of motor vehicles? We are not specifically looking for time-served mechanics, but an understanding of vehicle construction and technology would be considered.
- Have the physical and emotional resilience to deal with protracted hours at outdoor scenes which at times will be distressing?
- Live within a hour of one of our regional bases?

Remuneration and work pattern – Initially, you will be expected to work from our Wakefield base whilst undergoing your mentorship and training. During this period, you will be working Monday to Friday, following typical office hours (although you may be expected to work outside of these hours if required to attend a collision scene).

After a period of 6 to 12 months (subject to satisfactory progression), You will be expected to work on a rotating operational shift pattern, whilst also taking part in an on-call rota. Once working on the operational shift pattern, your salary will include a shift and weekend working allowance, plus any overtime remuneration and on-call payments. You will be entitled to a generous annual leave allowance, which increases with service, and you will be automatically enrolled on the local government pension scheme.

The starting salary is £31,434 rising to £33,348, which will attract an additional shift and weekend working enhancement once working on the operational shift pattern (£41.5k to 44k, at our Melton, Sheffield and Wakefield bases).

After initial training, and subject to a successful competency assessment (generally three years’ service) there is the opportunity to progress to £34,287 rising to £36,171, again attracting a shift and weekend working enhancement (£45.2 to £47.7k at our Melton, Sheffield and Wakefield bases).
