Applications are invited from constables who WILL have completed their probationary period by the end of the suitability course.

This is an excellent opportunity to become part of the Dog Support Unit where you will provide support and tactical advice at operational incidents to all districts and partner agencies - utilising their allocated dogs in order to meet the objectives of the Police and Crime Plan and making sure our communities are safe and feel safer.

To be considered for this unique role, you must have the ability to pass a Dog Handler pre-selection day, a Dog Suitability course and a General Purpose Dog course. In addition, you must have passed level 2 PSU training, or have completed it prior to attending a General Purpose Dog course, and have ‘in-date’ Officer Safety and First Aid training.

The ideal candidate will be capable of operational police work in the helicopter, hold a full current UK/European driving licence, a Police Standard Driving Permit, and be able to pass an occupational health unit hearing test (firearms and dogs).

Applicants must have current housing that will provide safe and suitable accommodation for a 12x12 ft kennel base and kennel, with a minimum of a 6ft perimeter fence. Applicants must also have the ability to lift a suitable dog cage, with assistance, in and out of a privately owned vehicle, and have a suitable vehicle to transport allocated police dogs to and from the place of work. These criteria are not exhaustive.

You will take responsibility for the exercise, care and welfare of allocated police dogs both on and off duty.

To apply for this role, you must be available on the following dates:
• to attend a 1 day pre-selection day and interview - week commencing 1st June 2024; and
• you must be able to attend one of the two week suitability courses which will commence on following dates:
• 8th July 2024
• 22nd July 2024

If successful at all stages of the process, you must be available to attend the 13 week General Purpose Dog course. This is currently scheduled to start on the 16th September 2024.

This role attracts a shift allowance of 20% plus weekend enhancement of 12.9%.

In line with HSE guidance/legislation, this role requires ongoing health surveillance commencing prior to appointment.
