West Yorkshire Police – What is your emergency?

As a Contact Officer you will be the first point of contact for the public of West Yorkshire when ringing the Police for assistance by answering both emergency and non-emergency calls.

This is a fundamental role in West Yorkshire Police and requires someone who is passionate to protect and serve the public.

We are currently recruiting Contact Officers (Entry Level) to join our new Contact Centre which is based over two sites at Force Headquarters, Laburnum Road, Wakefield and Dudley Hill Police Station, Bradford BD4.

Current vacancies are at Dudley Hill. We have available spaces on our next course which starts 18th February. Notice periods for successful candidates will be negotiated.

The Job

The Contact Centre currently take approximately 2 million calls per year, deal with thousands of visitors to our Helpdesks and processes over 750,000 crime and incident reports.

As a Contact Officer you will provide a professional call handling service in relation to crime and incident recording to members of the public and the Force.

You will answer calls for service including 999 and 101 calls, carry out vital telephone assessments to assess the needs and vulnerability of the caller and accurately record and communicate information to the caller. You will also operate and interrogate a range of technology in order to initiate a response to police officers and staff, this information is required to respond to and deal with incidents in line with Force policy.

The Person

To be successful in this demanding role, you will already have experience of computer packages such as Microsoft Office and the ability to successfully complete various IT courses required for this role.

You must have a minimum typing speed of 28 wpm and a good command of English, both verbal and written.

You must be able to work as part of a team.

We are looking for candidates who are prepared to work flexible hours to suit the requirements of the Contact Centre in order that we can keep our communities safe. You must therefore be willing to work a full rotating shift pattern (covering 24 hours, 365 days) as required.

Candidates with previous experience of working in a call centre environment would be desirable.


CONTACT OFFICERS

The Shifts

Full time - 24/7 consisting of 2 early shifts, 2 late shifts, 2 nights followed by 4 Rest Days

Job Share – 24/7 consisting of a repeating pattern - 2 early shifts and 1 late shift followed by 10 rest days, then 1 late shift, 2 night shifts followed by 4 rest days.

Shift enhancement is 20% plus 13.45% weekend enhancement.

Please note:

Successful candidates MUST complete the initial 8 week FULL TIME classroom based training which is essential for the role before going on to be mentored on your agreed shift pattern for a further 3 to 6 weeks. The Training is held at various West Yorkshire Police locations.

• On being successful in joining West Yorkshire Police as a Contact Officer, you will automatically be enrolled on our career progression scheme. This will enable you to obtain additional skills in Incident Management and/or Dispatch and to move up the pay scales to Scale 4 after approximately 15 months.

25 days’ holidays per year (pro rata) rising to 30 days’ over time and in line with your grade and length of service.
