West Yorkshire Police as the lead Force for the Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Scientific Support Services (RSSS) is looking to recruit Forensic Collision Investigators (FCI).

Regional Scientific Support Services form part of West Yorkshire Police and provide Forensic Collision Investigation services to the Yorkshire and Humber police forces. FCIs work regionally but operate from one of our four bases at Melton (Near Hull), Sheffield, Thirsk and Wakefield.

Working as an FCI, You will be trained to Foundation degree level in a fully funded training program. You will attend the scene of fatal and potentially fatal collisions as well as certain other vehicle related incidents, using cutting edge techniques and technology you will collect and collate evidence to produce an expert report for presentation to Coroners courts, Criminal Justice System (CJS) or other interested parties.

The Forensic Collision Investigation Unit provide cover across the whole of the Yorkshire and Humber region an area covering close to 5000 square miles with a population of over 5 million, bisected by three of the north’s busiest motorways. We attend scenes ranging from single vehicle collisions on country lanes to multi vehicle incidents on motorways.

Do you:

Have a good understanding of maths and physics?

Have the willingness to attend and ability to pass training courses up to foundation degree level?

Hold a full current UK/European driving licence?

Have the ability and willingness to work flexibility if required?

Have a general understanding of motor vehicles? We’re not specifically looking for time served mechanics, but an understanding of vehicle construction and technology would help.

Have the physical and emotional resilience to deal with protracted hours at outdoor scenes which at times will be distressing?

Remuneration and work pattern You will be expected to work in a 7 day rotating shift pattern, including some on call working outside those hours. You will be paid monthly which can include up to an additional 20% shift allowance plus a weekend working allowance, plus overtime and on call standby payments. You will be entitled to a generous annual leave allowance, which increases with service and you will be automatically enrolled into the local government pension scheme.

The starting salary is SO1 £29,793 rising to £31,725 attracting a 20% unsocial hours payment and a 13.4% weekend working enhancement.

After initial training and a successful competency assessment (generally three years’ service) there is the opportunity to progress to SO2 £32,673 rising to £34,578, again attracting a 20% unsocial hours payment and a 13.4% weekend working enhancement.

The application process will comprise a written application, if this is successful at shortlisting then you will be invited to sit a screening maths examination and attend a one day selection centre both will be carried out in West Yorkshire.

Further details of these processes will be sent out following shortlisting.

The examination will take place on week commencing Tuesday the 3rd of May 2022, applicants who reach the desired level in this exam will be invited to a one day selection centre which will take place Week commencing Monday the 16th of May 2022.

Interviews will take place early June.
