Salary £30,420 - £32,394 plus salary enhancements rates of: 1.8% October to March and 7.5% from April to September.

Expressions of interest are invited from individuals seeking an opportunity to secure a position as a member of the Driver Training Team, training and assessing Officers and Police Staff who use police vehicles as part of their role, to ensure that they drive safely and efficiently whilst demonstrating an attitude to driving that reflects the expectations of the communities they serve and those of the organisation.

Eligible candidates must hold a full, current UK/ European driving licence (Category B min) and have held this for at least three years having not acquired four or more penalty points within the past three years. You will also be expected to have a detailed knowledge of the Highway Code and Roadcraft publications.

Interested persons must be able to demonstrate their ability to drive to an advanced police driving standard and hold or demonstrate the ability to obtain a Level 3 Certificate in Learning & Development (or equivalent) and Assessors qualification. They must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, whilst having a good working knowledge and experience in the use of computer systems, including Microsoft applications.

Whilst not deemed essential, previous or current experience as a D.S.A. qualified Driving Instructor and/or a UK/European Vocational Driving Licence with Categories C, C+E, D or D1 would be advantageous.

As a Driver Trainer, you must be willing to work varied hours to suit the needs of the organisation; Driver Trainers work a three-week rota incorporating late shifts to meet mandatory requirements for driving in the hours of darkness. You must also have the ability to travel as a passenger in a motor vehicle for lengthy periods of time without suffering from motion sickness.

Important Information about the process:

Applicants will be expected to take a combined Highway Code and Roadcraft exam within a specified time frame and MUST achieve the required pass mark of 96%. Individuals will have 2 attempts at this and failure to pass will see them leave the selection process at this stage.

Successful candidates will then undergo an interview process where they will be expected to prepare a short 10-minute presentation to the interview panel on a subject given to them 30 minutes prior to the interview.

There is an expectation that successful candidates will be available to attend a 13-week trainer course (to include a 4-week advanced driving course) commencing Monday 22nd May 2023. Any candidates who are unable to attend the full course may be held on a succession list for future vacancies.

Confirmation of post will be following a six-month probationary period and on successful completion of the initial driver trainer’s course.
