Yorkshire and Humber Regional Scientific Support Services are seeking to identify appointable candidates for current and future, full and part-time, entry-level, Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) vacancies available over the next 12 months across Humberside, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire. Successful candidates will be held on a waiting list for a period of 12 months during which time they will, in succession, be offered vacancies that arise. This could include full time and part time contracts based at any of our CSI hub locations: Hull, Brigg, Harrogate, Thirsk, York, Scarborough, Sheffield, Ossett, Leeds, and Bradford.

We are looking for highly driven and motivated candidates to join us as Crime Scene Investigators where you will work as part of a highly professional regional team examining volume crime scenes as well as more serious and major incidents under guidance.

Our Crime Scene Investigators must meet the following essential criteria:

 Hold English Language, Maths and Science at Level 2/GCSE (A* - C or 9 -4) or equivalent demonstrable experience.

 Proven ability to operate modern technology including tablet devices, desktop computers and basic software applications.

 Good interpersonal and communication skills, experience of engaging effectively with a diverse range of people. Ability to present facts and rationale accurately, clearly, and concisely in written and oral formats.

 Emotional resilience with the ability to work in stressful, challenging, or unpleasant circumstances whilst maintaining concentration and accuracy, working in a methodical manner even when under pressure.

 Demonstrate understanding of Health and Safety legislation and other regulations including ISO 17020 relevant to crime scene examination.

 Demonstrate knowledge of the application of practical techniques used to examine crime scenes and understanding of the investigative response to such incidents.

RSSS provides specialist forensic support across the four police forces of Yorkshire & Humber. Although centrally managed, Crime Scene Investigators are locally based within communities. Deployed via our dedicated regional forensic control room, you may be called upon to attend crime scenes anywhere across the region, providing you with variety and insight of working in other geographical areas.

You will need to be confident, capable of learning quickly, have excellent communication skills and be able to work as part of a close team. Training

Crime Scene Investigators are trained to exceptionally high standards, working to strict regulations and procedures. The successful candidates will be provided with all the necessary training from our own dedicated CSI Training Team. You will receive a structured period of mentoring with qualified, experienced CSI’s ensuring that as a new CSI you are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge prior to working independently.

In addition to shift working roles, we have limited opportunities for non-shift working CSI across West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, and Humberside.

Crime Scene Investigators (Shift)

Salary starts at £24,921 rising to £29,874 pro rata plus 14% shift allowance and up to 14% weekend working allowance as applicable.

You will be expected to work a 7-day rotating shift pattern between the hours of 0700 – 2300, working two out of three weekends with some midweek days off.

Crime Scene Investigators (Non-Shift)

Salary starts at £24,921 rising to £29,874 pro rata (no additional enhancements for shift or weekend working.

You will be expected to work weekdays only between the hours of 0800 – 1600.

Whether you work shifts or not, as a Crime Scene Investigator, you will be required to regularly work alone, and for those on shift, this includes during the hours of darkness. Therefore, you will ideally need to be resilient and perceptive with a discerning character.

You will be paid monthly which includes additional shift and weekend working allowances as applicable, enhancing overall basic pay plus any overtime payments. You will be entitled to a generous annual leave allowance of 25 days which increases with service, and you will be automatically enrolled into a local government pension scheme. Most locations include free and secure on-site parking.

You will need to hold a full UK manual driving licence.

Progression

The post of Crime Scene Investigator offers a career progression scheme. Future promotion opportunities to Senior CSI level often become available will equip you to carry out major crime scene examinations.

Assessment and Interview

Candidates will need to complete an initial application form. Those who are successful on the initial application paper sift will be invited to our CSI Training Centre in Wetherby for a half day practical assessment. This will include several activities to measure suitability in role and will take place between 4th March 24 and 8th March 24. Those who pass the practical assessments will be invited for interview which will take place between 25th March 2024 to 28th March 2024 and 2nd April 2024. If applying for the role, you will need to be available during these dates, alternative dates will not be offered.

For roles which are advertised as Career Progression Schemes, individuals will be appointed to the bottom scale point of the appropriate grade within the scheme, based on the role entry requirements. Full progression through the scheme may be subject to attaining a specific qualification or successfully passing an assessment or review.
