About The Placement
Following on from another successful year with placement students from universities, the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Organised Crime Unit (YHROCU) is pleased to announce that it will be offering paid placements for a number of interns for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Successful applicants will be offered placements within the Regional Technical Development Unit, based in Wakefield, working alongside a number of exciting teams including Cyber Crime, Technical Innovation, Dark Web Operations and Specialist Departments.

We are looking for skills in software engineering, network security, data science and a keen interest in all aspects of cyber security and cutting-edge technology. We will consider each applicant on their merits.

This placement offers a unique opportunity to work in the forefront of digital policing and gain valuable experience in a technical workspace, supporting local forces, regional investigations, and national projects. Completion of this placement will provide a good grounding for future employment from an established network of employers.

The Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit is a leading and inspiring UK Law Enforcement Unit dedicated to preventing, prosecuting, and disrupting serious and organised crime ensuring a co-ordinated national approach across Government, law enforcement, security, and intelligence agencies .

Within this role, you will use your enthusiasm and experience to push boundaries around Software Engineering, Networking, Vulnerability Exploitation, Cloud Computing and developing groundbreaking solutions for UK and international Law Enforcement, to support the wider aims of law enforcement.

Placement Dates: Summer 2026 – 1st September 2027.

Role:
• Support and develop the research and development function, horizon scanning for future threats.
• Own and develop projects around emerging technologies and criminal methodologies. (Use of Cryptocurrency, Internet of Things, Crime as a Service, Illicit trading of commodities on the dark web, Virtual Reality).
• Develop and implement new software and hardware solutions, exploiting and targeting criminal use of technology.
• Build effective working relationships with external agencies, academia, and Industry to maximise learning opportunities and advance our operational capabilities.
• Provide advice and support to the wider ROCU with the development and delivery of digital tactics.
• Deliver presentations to Law Enforcement and partners relating to ongoing research and development projects.

The application process will include an application form and shortlisted candidates will then complete a bespoke CTF before attending an assessment day including a formal interview with YHROCU staff. We are looking for a range of skill sets so this should offer candidates a breadth of opportunities to show their passion and knowledge.

Successful applicants will undertake security vetting to SC level.

About The Candidate:
Essential requirements:
• Ability and willingness to travel both throughout the Region and Country.
• Currently studying a degree (minimum) in the field of computing and technology.
• Enthusiasm and Experience with security testing.
• Knowledge and Experience with Software Engineering, including version control, CI-CD pipelines, and best practices.
• Knowledge, understanding and experience of command line and Linux.
• Experience of working collaboratively to solve complex problems.
• An ability to communicate verbally and through written methods, breaking down complex technical subject matters for non-technical colleagues.

Desirable requirements:
• An understanding of the nature and impact of cyber-attacks and cybercrime.
• Demonstratable experience of procedural and/or object-oriented programming languages such as Python, TypeScript, Golang and Java etc.
• A basic understanding of software testing methods.
• An understanding of Open-Source Intelligence opportunities and techniques.
• A basic understanding of cloud computing such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.

Security Vetting:
This role requires applicants to hold an SC (Security Clearance) Vetting clearance. Applicants should be aware that it is not always possible to conduct adequate vetting checks on persons who have not been resident within the UK for the last 5 years. Therefore, where this applies, applicants may be unsuccessful on the grounds that it was not possible to vet them to the appropriate standard.
