West Yorkshire Police is looking a recruit a number of Detention Officers at various locations across the Force.

The Job:

Are you looking for a job where no two days are the same? Well the Detention Officer role could be the job you are looking for.

The Detention Officer role is a challenging but very rewarding and varied role.

You will be responsible for receiving and processing detained persons, undertaking searches, obtaining fingerprints, photographs and non-intimate samples for use in drug testing or DNA sampling (and any future samples).

The role involves escorting and restraining detained persons by means of reasonable use of force and therefore an acceptable level of fitness is required. You'll need to be alert at all times, think on your feet and make quick decisions.

Do you have what it takes?

No professional qualifications are required - we give you all the training and support you need, however, you must be physically capable to undertake the duties of the post including violent detainee handling.

You must be aged 18 or over at the time of applying, there's no upper age limit.

The role requires good communication skills both written and oral, knowledge and understanding of computer systems, common sense and lots of resilience.

You must have the ability to successfully pass the initial training course and sessions including First Aid, detainee handling and IT courses.

You will have a genuine passion to care for our communities and be confident dealing with members of the public in a diplomatic, confident and authoritative way and of course, respect the differences between us all that make our communities what they are.

Training:

Successful candidates will undertake a six week training course at Carr Gate, Junction 41. You will receive training on all aspects of the role.

Locations:

We have vacancies in Huddersfield, Leeds, Bradford and Halifax. During the recruitment process, you will be asked for your preferences as to where you would prefer to be located. Whilst we will take into consideration your preferences these cannot be guaranteed. The postings will be based on business requirements.

Shifts

We operate 24/7, 365 days of the year. You must be prepared to work unsocial hours in a shift rota covering 24 hours/7 days a week, working both day/night shifts with rest days and be willing to work at such other places within the force as may reasonably required.
